Dengue Fever: Symptoms, Recovery, and Prevention

Aedes aegypti mosquito on human skin

Introduction

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that affects many people worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. It is caused by the dengue virus (DENV) and is spread mainly through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. Aedes albopictus can also transmit the virus.

Most people recover from dengue, but some develop severe dengue, which can be life-threatening without prompt medical care. Understanding dengue fever symptoms, transmission, and prevention can help protect you and your family.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the primary carrier of dengue virus.

What Causes Dengue Fever?

Dengue is caused by four related virus types, known as DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. Infection occurs when an infected mosquito bites a person. Dengue does not normally spread through casual contact, such as touching, hugging, or sharing food.

Dengue-carrying mosquitoes are often active during the day, including around sunrise and sunset. Preventing mosquito bites is therefore important both indoors and outdoors.

Dengue Fever Symptoms

Symptoms usually begin about 4–10 days after an infected mosquito bite. Common symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Muscle, joint, or bone pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Tiredness and weakness

These symptoms can resemble other infections, so symptoms alone cannot confirm dengue. Seek medical advice if you develop a fever and may have been exposed to dengue.

Warning Signs of Severe Dengue

Severe dengue requires urgent medical care. Warning signs include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, difficulty breathing, extreme tiredness, restlessness, or cold and clammy skin.

Do not wait for symptoms to worsen. Seek emergency medical care if any warning signs appear, particularly when a fever begins to improve.

Where Is Dengue Most Common?

Dengue occurs in many tropical and subtropical regions, including South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central and South America, the Caribbean, parts of Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Some areas of the United States also report locally transmitted cases.

The risk varies by location, mosquito populations, weather, and local disease activity. Travellers should check current health advice before visiting areas where dengue is present.

How Does Dengue Fever Spread?

Dengue spreads mainly through infected Aedes mosquitoes. A mosquito can acquire the virus by biting an infected person and later transmit it to another person.

Dengue is not normally spread directly from person to person through coughing, touching, or sharing food. However, infected people travelling between regions can contribute to the spread of the virus when local mosquitoes are present.

Dengue Testing: Positive and Negative Results

Healthcare professionals select dengue tests according to how long symptoms have been present.

NS1 Antigen Test

The NS1 antigen test is commonly used during the first seven days of illness.

  • Positive result: Supports a diagnosis of acute dengue infection.
  • Negative result: Does not always rule out dengue. The result must be interpreted alongside symptoms, timing, and other test findings.

Depending on the stage of illness, healthcare professionals may also use molecular tests or antibody tests. Tell your healthcare provider when your symptoms began so the most appropriate testing can be selected.

How to Recover From Dengue Fever

Most people with uncomplicated dengue recover within one to two weeks, although fatigue may last longer. There is no specific antiviral medicine that cures dengue, so treatment generally focuses on hydration, symptom relief, monitoring, and medical support when necessary.

Drink Enough Fluids

Maintaining hydration is important, particularly if you have a fever or are vomiting. Depending on your condition, suitable fluids may include water, oral rehydration solution, and clear soups. Follow medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down or show signs of dehydration.

Manage Fever Safely

Paracetamol, also called acetaminophen, may be recommended for fever and pain when appropriate. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless a healthcare professional specifically advises otherwise, because these medicines can increase the risk of bleeding in dengue.

Rest and Monitor Symptoms

Get adequate rest and follow your healthcare provider’s instructions. Dengue can become severe even after the fever starts to settle, so watch carefully for warning signs and seek urgent care if they develop.

Best Foods During Dengue Recovery

No food can cure dengue, but balanced meals can provide energy and nutrients during recovery. Choose foods that are easy to tolerate, such as bananas, apples, rice, oatmeal, vegetable soup, plain yogurt, boiled vegetables, and eggs if tolerated.

Fruits such as oranges and amla provide vitamin C and can be included in a balanced diet. However, they are not proven treatments for dengue and should not replace medical care or appropriate hydration.

If your appetite is low, try small, frequent meals. Follow professional dietary advice if you have persistent vomiting or other complications.

How to Prevent Dengue Fever

Dengue prevention focuses on avoiding mosquito bites and reducing mosquito breeding sites.

Use Mosquito Repellent

Choose a suitable, approved insect repellent and follow its instructions. Products containing DEET, picaridin, or other approved active ingredients can help protect against mosquito bites.

Wear Protective Clothing

Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and other clothing that reduces exposed skin when practical. Follow local advice about additional protection in high-risk areas.

Remove Standing Water

Aedes mosquitoes can breed in water collected in everyday containers. At least once a week, empty, scrub, cover, or dispose of items that collect water, including buckets, flowerpot trays, old tyres, and uncovered containers.

Keep water-storage containers covered and maintain gutters and drains so water does not accumulate.

Keep Mosquitoes Out of Your Home

Install screens on windows and doors, repair holes, and use air conditioning where available. Reduce mosquito exposure both indoors and outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dengue Fever

How long does dengue fever last?

Many people recover within one to two weeks, although weakness and tiredness can continue for several weeks.

Can a person get dengue more than once?

Yes. There are four dengue virus types. Infection with one type does not provide lifelong protection against all the others. A later infection with a different type can increase the risk of severe dengue.

Is dengue contagious?

Dengue does not normally spread through casual person-to-person contact. It is transmitted mainly through infected mosquitoes.

Which medicines should be avoided during dengue?

Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise because they may increase bleeding risk. Ask a healthcare professional before taking medicines to manage symptoms.

When should I go to the hospital?

Seek emergency medical care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, breathing difficulty, extreme tiredness, or other warning signs of severe dengue.

Final Thoughts

Dengue fever is a serious mosquito-borne disease, but early medical assessment, appropriate monitoring, hydration, and prevention measures can help reduce the risk of complications. Use mosquito repellent, wear protective clothing, and remove standing water around your home.

If you develop a fever after possible exposure to dengue, seek medical advice. Do not rely on foods or home remedies as a substitute for appropriate medical care.
